"I am watching some seasoned leaders and new ones blossoming and growing as they help me lead Brooklyn Teen Challenge to remain true to my brother's original vision." –Don Wilkerson
My name is Mariah..... My childhood was the dream. I loved God with all my heart. As my innocent life unraveled with losing faith in God, my future that began with such promise and unlimited opportunity crashed. I was diagnosed as mentally ill at the age of 12 and the dream turned into a nightmare. I attempted suicide more than five times. I was addicted to drugs and alcohol, and became involved in reckless behavior. I was hooked on heroin and crack and every other drug that would help me to not feel. I became a prostitute and sold my soul away to whoever had my next fix. I would do anything to escape my "reality." I would live in hospitals, pimps houses, crack houses, halfway houses, etc. I would roam the streets lost and alone and trapped in my nightmare of an existence. I thought, "If there is a God I hate Him..." I lost all faith in anything. No one could help me. One night, when a client came to purchase me, he took one look at me and said, "I'm not paying for this." Drugs and my lifestyle had taken such a toll that he thought I had become so ugly inside and out that I was not even worth any money. I had arrived at the place of dark desperation... I knew something had to break. If evil existed, then wouldn't God have to exist too? I set out to find God. I sought hard for Him, to know Him, to see Him. I begged Him to help me, and He radically saved me! I now seek Him in the morning, I seek Him at night. I converse with Him all day, and ask Him questions about this life and what I am to do for Him. I want to be in His presence all the time. There is no other place I would rather be than with Him and doing things for Him. One of the things I feel He wants me to do is minister to the poor, broken, beautiful souls in Africa. Give and share the joy of making a difference.
